Competitions
at NEHW2010

With Olympic fever still in the air, you can test your skills in Solo and Quartet competitions at this year's Northeast Horn Workshop. If you or your quartet are interested in competing in one of these events, simply complete the Entry Form and we'll be in touch with you about all the details.

Solo Competitions

The Solo competitions of the NEHW2010 will consist of two divisions:

  • High School - Students must be enrolled full-time in a private or public high school, and must have been born after March 12, 1991.  
  • University and Emerging Professionals - Participation in the University and Emerging Professionals Division is restricted to contestants born on or after March 12, 1978. High school students may enter the University/Emerging Professional division.
  • Contestants in either division must be prepared to furnish verification of age by showing a valid driver's license, birth certificate, or passport at the competition site.

Quartet Competition

The Quartet Competition of the NEHW2010 is open to horn quartets of any age that have not performed professionally under a full-time contract as a horn quartet.

Repertoire Requirements

High School Solo Competition

Select one of the following works for the first round, and one for the second:
  • Gliere Intermezzo
  • F. Strauss Notturno
  • Mozart, any Concerto 1st mvt or 2nd and 3rd mvt
  • Joseph Haydn Concerto no. 1, 1st movement
  • Saint-Säens Morceau de Concert
  • R. Strauss, Concerto no. 1, op. 11 (1st movement or 2nd and 3rd movement)

University and Emerging Professional Solo Division

First round – one of the following works:
  • Mozart, 1st movement from any of the concertos
  • Strauss, Concerto no. 1, 1st mvt.
Second Round - Work of the candidate’s choice. Suggested level of repertoire as represented by the following:
  • Gliere Concerto for Horn, op. 91 (1st or 3rd movement)
  • Strauss, Concerto no. 2 (1st or 2nd and 3rd movement)
  • Schumann, Adagio and Allegro
  • Hindemith, Sonata (1st or 2nd and 3rd movement)
  • Buyanovsky, España (from Travelling Impressions, McCoy ed.)
  • Poulenc, Elegie for Horn and Piano

Quartet Competition

First Round

Any two movements from one of the following works:

Second Round
  • Work of Quartet’s choosing. Original works for horn quartet are preferred (time limit 12 minutes)

  1. Application to the competitions of the Northeast Horn Workshop 2010 constitutes acceptance of all rules and regulations.
  2. All contestants must be registered participants of the Northeast Horn Workshop 2010.
  3. Competitors must submit an entry form and a $15.00 competition fee per solo competitor, or one application form and a $20.00 competition fee per quartet. Fees are payable upon check-in at the Workshop, and help us defray the cost of collaborators, other personnel and other expenses connected with running the competitions.
  4. The maximum time allowed for a solo or quartet work is 12 minutes (including winning performance).
  5. Competitions will consist of a preliminary and final round, each adjudicated by a panel of at least three (3) judges.
  6. All contestants will be given copies of judge's evaluation sheets.
  7. All decisions by the judges are final. The jury may decline to award prizes. The judges may decline to award first or second prizes, or name finalists. If a first prize is awarded, the judges may decline to award a second prize. In the event of a tie, the prize money will be divided equally.
  8. Each contestant must provide their own piano scores (originals, no copies) for the accompanists, and one copy of the score to the judges for non-standard works. Quartets should submit one original and two (2) copies of the score to the judges for the final round.
  9. NEHW2010 accompanists will be available for one rehearsal and the first round performance (contestants may use their own pianist for the first round only, and are responsible for the cost). All finalists and winning contestants will use NEHW2010 accompanists for one rehearsal and the final round (and Sunday performance, if applicable) at no additional cost.
  10. Judges will not be allowed to adjudicate family members.
  11. By making application to, and participating in the competitions of the Northeast Horn Workshop 2010, contestants grant permission for the use of photographs, recordings and interviews in all media venues.
  12. Winners in the solo and quartet competition, in addition to receiving a cash award, will perform in the closing concert of the NEHW on Sunday, March 14, 2010.
